Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I perform a search?

You can search by MC#1, material name, manufacturer name, or country2.

You can also search by single keyword (example: textile) or by multiple keywords (example: durable textiles).

When searching by multiple keywords, you do not need to use quotation marks or other punctuation.

The search engine will sort your results by relevance; exact matches to your search term or phrase will appear first.

After you get your results, you can refine your search by checking additional criteria on the Refine Search menu. This operates just like the Advanced Search feature.

1The MC# is a six-digit inventory number assigned to each material in the database. When searching by MC#, do not type "MC#" before the number. For example, when searching for MC# 6598-01, enter 6598-01 or 659801 into the search field.

2"Country" is defined by the Manufacturer’s main office.

2. How do I use Advanced Search?

Advanced Search allows you to narrow your search according to specific criteria. If you are looking for a material with very precise attributes, we recommend starting here.

For example, you could search for Polymers

  • that can be Injection Molded,
  • are Biodegradable,
  • have High UV Resistance,
  • High Thermal Conductivity,
  • and a Glossy Surface Texture

(Your search for polymers with these criteria would return 5 results.)

The advanced search engine narrows your results each time you check a new characteristic. The number of entries found will appear at the top of the screen.

When you have finished making all of your selections, click “Show All” to view your results.

3. How can you help me with my search?

Our Library staff is available to help you navigate the database. On-site subscribers looking for additional guidance are encouraged to make an appointment to visit our Materials Library. If you need additional assistance with an online search and cannot find the answer in this FAQ, please contact us.

For higher-level support, ask us about our ThinkLAB Consulting Services. From identifying a specific material to recommending a range of solutions for a given application, we provide concurrent materials research and guidance during all phases of your project. We use our in-depth knowledge of materials science and comprehensive understanding of the role materials play in design development to achieve practical, customized and targeted results.

Contact us to arrange a consultation.

4. How can I see the materials I scanned during my on-site research visit?

The materials you scanned during your research appointment are saved in My Materials. (The folder will be labeled with the date of your visit.)

5. How can I add materials to My Materials?

My Materials is a way to tag groups of materials so you can quickly reference them at a later time.

For example, you can create a tag for a certain class of material (e.g. biopolymers or textiles) or a tag for materials you are considering for a project.

Each Product Page has a field for entering a tag name, which appears below the product’s thumbnail images. To tag a material, simply type the name of the new tag you wish to create or enter the name of a tag you have already created.

A material can be tagged with multiple words. Each tag you create is saved in My Materials.

6. How are the materials in the database organized?

Rather than grouping materials by application, such as “architecture” or “aeronautics,” we organize them according to their chemistry.

Each material belongs to one of eight categories:

PolymerCeramic
Natural Cement-based
Metal Carbon-based
GlassProcess

We believe this classification system bring users into contact with materials they might never have thought to investigate, increasing the number of possible solutions and creating more opportunities for cross-industry pollination.

7. I cannot reach a manufacturer / The material I want is no longer available.

While we regularly review the content in our database to ensure that our manufacturer contacts and product descriptions are current and correct, sometimes a material is discontinued or a manufacturer changes their contact information before we have a chance to update or records. If you have discovered an inaccuracy in our database or have experienced issues contacting a manufacturer, please Contact Us.

8. How can I change my password or update my email address and contact information?

To change your password, click on the link in My Account on the top menu. To update your contact information, please Contact Us with your request.

9. How can I upgrade my subscription?

Whether you’re an online user who wants onsite access, an individual who wants corporate access, or a company looking to increase its number of users, you can upgrade your subscription at any time.

Your account manager will help you determine the level of service that best meets your needs.
